Q: What documents do I need to travel to Liberia as a citizen?

A: As a Liberian citizen the only requirement for re/entry into the country is a valid passport. If not valid, contact the Embassy of Liberia at 202-723-0437 for information on renewing your passport; there will be a renewal fee of $75.00USD.

Q: What documents do I need to travel to Liberia as a non-citizen?

A: As a non-citizen you will need to have a valid passport that is valid up to six months from date of entry. Exceptions are members of the United States Army, United Nations Laissez-Passer holders and persons with a valid Seaman Book who are traveling on duty. Almost everyone is required to have a visa to enter Liberia; ECOWAS member countries are exempt as are diplomats with accreditation from Liberia; also persons with multiple-entry visa are exempt. A: Visas issued are of four types: diplomatic, official, tourist and ordinary.

Q: What happens if I overstay my visa?

A: Immigration officials at the airport may authorize permits for a 48-hour stay only.  Those wishing to stay longer must go to the Central Bureau of Immigration on Broad Street between Center and Gurley Streets in downtown Monrovia.  The Central Bureau issues permits for stays up to three months for a fee of $100.

Q: What is the Green Card Lottery?

A: The Green Card Lottery is visa system set up by the INS to awards immigrant visas to 50,000 people from countries with a low immigration rate to the United States (not more than 50,000 from one country in the last past five years). When an individual is selected, he/she is allowed to apply for permanent resident status. Once granted he/she can live and work in the United States permanently and is allowed to have their spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 migrate to the United States... more.

Q: What health precautions should it take when traveling to Liberia?

A: Anyone traveling to Liberia should visit their doctor at least 4-6 weeks before departure for required vaccines and medications for diseases such as cholera, malaria and typhoid fever. Make sure to start and finish dosage as instructed. A Valid Certificate of Immunization against Yellow Fever is also required in accordance with International Health Regulations for all persons entering Liberia.
